INEC Launches Self-Registration Portal, Extends Voter Registration Deadline

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced a self-service online voter registration platform to make voter registration easier and more accessible for eligible first-time voters across Nigeria.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in Lafia by Nasarawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mohammed Abubakar-Sadiq. He said the platform will become operational on Wednesday, July 8, through INEC's Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) portal.

According to him, the new system allows first-time voters to begin and complete their registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting an INEC office. The platform also features identity verification, biometric validation and security checks to protect the integrity of the National Register of Voters.

Abubakar-Sadiq explained that the innovation is part of INEC's efforts to improve service delivery, increase accessibility and encourage greater citizen participation in the electoral process.

He noted that individuals seeking to transfer their voting location, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), or complete an existing physical registration must still visit designated INEC registration centres.

The REC also announced that the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise has been extended by two weeks. Originally scheduled to end on July 10, the exercise will now close on July 26 following feedback from INEC offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

He said the extension is intended to give more eligible Nigerians the opportunity to register ahead of future elections.

Abubakar-Sadiq recalled that the nationwide CVR exercise began on August 18, 2025, and has recorded significant participation, including registrations by Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs).

He urged all eligible citizens who have not yet registered to take advantage of both the extension and the newly introduced online registration platform, while reaffirming INEC's commitment to delivering a transparent, inclusive and technology-driven voter registration process.
