Hundreds of protesters, led by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, gathered in New Delhi on Monday to demand the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, seven years after the region was reorganized as a federally administered territory.
Demonstrators carried placards and chanted slogans before police stopped the protest. Abdullah later said the movement would continue until the region regains its statehood and constitutional rights.
"This is only the beginning of our struggle for statehood, our rights, our dignity, and everything that was taken away from us," Abdullah said.
In August 2019, the Indian government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special constitutional status, removed its statehood, and split the region into two federally governed territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The Indian government has repeatedly stated that statehood will be restored at an "appropriate time," but has not announced a specific timeline.
Abdullah's National Conference party has continued to press for the immediate restoration of statehood, arguing that the government should fulfill its earlier commitment.
Meanwhile, leaders of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the protest, claiming it was an attempt to divert attention from the regional government's governance challenges.
Jammu and Kashmir remains a disputed region claimed in full by both India and Pakistan, though each country administers part of the territory. India has long accused Pakistan of supporting separatist militants in the region, an allegation Islamabad denies.
