The Iran-backed Houthi movement says it has attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, raising fears of a new disruption to global oil shipments amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States.
According to the Houthis, the attacks targeted the oil tankers Encelia and Layla using missiles and drones as part of what they described as a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities confirmed that the Encelia was struck near the port of Jizan, causing a fire at the front of the vessel, while the reported attack on the Layla has not been officially confirmed.
The latest incident has increased concerns over the security of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital shipping route linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Several oil tankers have already altered their routes to avoid the area.
The attacks come as fighting between the United States and Iran continues to intensify. U.S. forces reportedly carried out another round of strikes on Iranian military targets, while Iran claimed it launched retaliatory attacks on U.S. military facilities in Jordan and Kuwait.
President Donald Trump warned that the United States would target Iranian infrastructure if commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz continued to be threatened. Iran responded by warning it would strike regional energy and economic infrastructure if such actions were carried out.
The growing tensions around both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait have raised concerns about global energy supplies, with analysts warning that prolonged disruptions could further increase oil prices and affect international trade.
The conflict has also continued to take a heavy humanitarian toll, with casualties reported on both sides as military operations expand across the region.
