Hamas has, for the first time, agreed in principle to surrender its weapons as part of a US-backed peace initiative aimed at ending the war in Gaza, according to officials involved in the negotiations.
The agreement, announced by US President Donald Trump, is conditional on Israel fulfilling its commitments under the existing ceasefire, including reducing military operations, withdrawing troops to agreed positions, and allowing increased humanitarian aid into Gaza.
A senior Hamas official said the group would only begin the disarmament process after Israel implements its obligations under the peace roadmap. Israel, however, insists it will not withdraw its forces from current positions until Hamas has genuinely disarmed, highlighting a key obstacle to implementing the agreement.
The proposed deal forms part of a broader multi-phase peace plan overseen by the international Board of Peace, which is tasked with facilitating Gaza's security, reconstruction, and governance.
While Germany, France, the European Union, and the United Kingdom welcomed the announcement as a positive step toward peace, they stressed that success depends on both sides fully honoring the agreement.
Meanwhile, many Palestinians in Gaza expressed cautious optimism, saying previous ceasefire agreements failed to stop the violence. Residents called for a lasting end to the conflict, continued humanitarian assistance, and concrete actions rather than promises.
Elsewhere in the region, Kuwait said it intercepted Iranian drones targeting military facilities early Friday, while Iranian authorities indicated that commercial transit through the Strait of Hormuz could gradually resume once regional stability is restored. No new US strikes inside Iran were reported overnight.
