Guyana Ferry Carrying 116 People Capsizes; More Than 50 Rescued

A ferry carrying 116 passengers and crew capsized off the coast of Guyana, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation.

The vessel, MV Barima, sent out a distress call at around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday before overturning near Iron Punt while travelling from Georgetown, the country's capital, to Port Kaituma.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips confirmed that 53 people had been rescued, while search teams continued efforts to locate the remaining passengers and crew.

The rescue operation involves the Guyana Coast Guard, private vessels, and emergency responders. Public Works Minister Juan Edghill said the ferry was equipped with about 250 life jackets, eight lifeboats, and other safety equipment. Medical personnel have also been deployed to provide immediate treatment to survivors.

Authorities said the cause of the accident has not yet been determined, and investigations are expected to begin once rescue operations are completed.

Search efforts are continuing as officials remain hopeful that more survivors will be found.
