Four Nigerian universities have emerged as winners of the maiden Nigerian Engineering Olympiad (NEO), securing a combined ₦235 million in grants and funding to support innovative engineering projects and strengthen research.
Student teams from Modibbo Adama University, Yola, University of Ibadan, University of Jos, and University of Nigeria, Nsukka impressed judges with practical solutions addressing challenges in security, healthcare, agriculture, and energy.
Modibbo Adama University claimed the overall prize, receiving ₦50 million in seed funding for Ubuntu Sapphire, a community-based security intelligence and emergency alert system designed for rural and underserved communities with limited internet access.
The University of Ibadan placed second with Aurora Birth, a health technology solution aimed at reducing newborn deaths caused by birth asphyxia, earning ₦30 million.
The University of Jos secured third place and ₦20 million for Sentra, an AI-powered solar device that detects crop diseases, pests, and soil nutrient deficiencies before visible symptoms appear.
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, finished fourth, receiving ₦10 million for Flameless, an innovative power-generation system that converts associated gas into electricity for homes and businesses.
Beyond the student awards, the engineering faculties of the winning institutions also received support. Modibbo Adama University was awarded a Centre of Excellence building, while the University of Ibadan and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka received ₦75 million and ₦50 million, respectively, to strengthen engineering education and research.
Organisers said the competition attracted 984 students from 80 tertiary institutions, with projects evaluated for innovation, technical excellence, commercial potential, societal impact, and sustainability.
The winning teams will also benefit from mentorship, business development support, industry partnerships, and commercialisation opportunities to help transform their ideas into market-ready solutions.
