At least 25 people have died after heavy monsoon rains triggered devastating floods and landslides across northern and northeastern India over the weekend, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The worst-hit areas were the districts of Poonch, Rajouri, and Doda in Indian-administered Kashmir, where 15 people lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents. Several others remain missing as rescue operations continue.
In Nagaland, persistent rainfall caused multiple landslides, killing nine people, while emergency responders recovered four bodies from affected areas.
In neighboring Assam, flooding claimed one life and has affected more than 57,000 residents across seven districts, according to the state's disaster management agency.
India's Meteorological Department has warned that active monsoon conditions are expected to continue across northwestern, eastern, and northeastern parts of the country for the next six to seven days, raising concerns over further flooding and landslides.
Meanwhile, neighboring Nepal has also been severely impacted by the monsoon season. Since mid-June, 27 people have died, one person remains missing, and 69 others have been injured due to floods, landslides, heavy rainfall, and lightning strikes.
Several major highways in Nepal, including the route connecting Kathmandu to the southern plains, have been blocked by landslide debris, disrupting transportation and rescue efforts.
Authorities in both India and Nepal have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as heavy rainfall is forecast to continue.
