Delta Government Gives 86 Returnees from South Africa ₦2 Million Per Family, Monthly Allowance

The Delta State Government has announced a comprehensive support package for 86 indigenes who recently returned from South Africa following xenophobic attacks.

At a reception held on Friday in Asaba, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by his Chief of Staff, Johnson Erijo, revealed that each affected family will receive ₦2 million in financial assistance. In addition, individual returnees will receive a monthly stipend of ₦200,000, while families will be paid ₦300,000 every month starting from August 2026 until the end of the governor's first term.

The government also pledged to provide free medical examinations, healthcare services, and trauma counselling to help the returnees recover from their experiences.

Governor Oborevwori expressed sympathy for the victims, describing the attacks as inhumane and commending the Federal Government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ensuring their safe evacuation back to Nigeria.

He encouraged the returnees not to lose hope despite the hardships they faced, urging them to rebuild their lives and continue pursuing their dreams. He also called on communities across Delta State to warmly welcome and support those who have returned.

The Commissioner in charge of the Bureau for Special Duties, Etacherure Terry, said the intervention was funded through the governor's contingency allocation after the State Emergency Management Agency exhausted its annual budget. He added that every returnee would be properly identified, documented, and supported to restart life in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the returnees, Jacob Agbada thanked both the Federal Government and the Delta State Government for their assistance. He described the xenophobic attacks in South Africa as traumatic and advised Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad to think carefully before relocating to the country.

Another returnee, Saturday Akanuche, said the financial support had restored his hope, noting that it would enable him to start a small business and rebuild his life after losing everything during the attacks.
