Cameroon’s ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM) has held a rare meeting of its senior leadership as public concern grows over the prolonged absence of President Paul Biya, who has been outside the country for 45 days.
President Biya, 93, departed Cameroon on June 7 for what officials described as a brief private visit to Europe. However, the presidency has yet to announce when he will return, making this his longest stay abroad in recent years.
The CPDM's Secretary-General, Jean Nkuete, convened the meeting, describing it only as an "important working session" without revealing its agenda. Authorities have not indicated whether the meeting was connected to the president’s absence.
Opposition parties have called on the government to reassure citizens about the continuity of leadership. The Cameroon Democratic Union urged officials to provide clear information on the functioning of the state while the president remains overseas.
Government officials have previously dismissed speculation about Biya's health, insisting that he remains fully capable of governing the country from abroad.
Earlier this year, Cameroon’s parliament approved the return of the office of vice president, who would be next in line should the presidency become vacant. However, President Biya has not yet appointed anyone to the position and has also not announced a new cabinet following his re-election last October.
President Paul Biya has led Cameroon since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving heads of state.
