Bwala: Some Nigerians in UK Earning £2,600 Monthly Struggle More Than ₦60,000 Earners at Home

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has argued that some Nigerians living and working in the United Kingdom on monthly salaries of between £2,600 and £2,800 may face greater financial hardship than individuals earning ₦60,000 in Nigeria.

Speaking during a television interview, Bwala said the high cost of rent, utilities, transportation, and other living expenses in the UK leaves many workers with very little disposable income, forcing some to take on multiple jobs just to survive.

He also claimed that many highly educated Nigerians who relocate to the UK end up working in care homes and other low-paying jobs despite holding university degrees, describing the situation as a form of modern-day economic hardship.

According to him, while Nigerians living at home may earn less, they often benefit from family support and lower living costs. However, he acknowledged that countries like the UK provide better infrastructure, healthcare, and social services.

Bwala added that the Federal Government has introduced policies aimed at improving citizens' welfare, including subsidised dialysis treatment in federal hospitals and free Caesarean section services, while noting that more interventions would depend on available resources.
