Explosions struck an area near the hotel hosting French President Emmanuel Macron during his landmark visit to Syria on Tuesday, raising fresh concerns about the country's fragile security situation.
According to Syrian security officials, the blasts occurred close to Macron's accommodation, prompting authorities to seal off nearby roads and tighten security. Witnesses reported hearing explosions and seeing smoke rising from the area.
Despite the incident, the French presidency confirmed that Macron was not affected and did not hear the explosions. His official schedule continued as planned, including a meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the Presidential Palace.
Macron's visit marks the first by a European Union head of state since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in 2024. The trip highlights Syria's changing political landscape under al-Sharaa's leadership, even as the country continues to face security threats and instability following years of conflict.
