Five Kenyan security personnel have been killed in an ambush by the armed group Al-Shabab near the Somalia border in Mandera County, Kenyan authorities confirmed.
According to police, the attack took place on Tuesday when a Special Operations Group patrol was ambushed near Wantey Dam, about six kilometres from Lafey Police Station. Five officers were killed during the assault.
A reinforcement team sent to the area was later targeted by a roadside bomb, which destroyed an armoured vehicle. Authorities said no additional casualties were recorded in the explosion.
Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack through its affiliated media channels. The incident is one of the deadliest in a recent wave of cross-border attacks targeting Kenya's northeastern region.
Earlier this month, Kenyan security forces said they killed 11 suspected Al-Shabab fighters during an operation near the border, disrupting what officials described as a planned attack on a nearby village. Days later, armed men launched separate attacks on two villages in the same district.
Al-Shabab, an armed group linked to al-Qaeda, has been fighting Somalia's government for nearly two decades and continues to carry out attacks in Somalia as well as cross-border operations in Kenya and Ethiopia.
Security analysts say the group's attacks are intended to pressure Kenya into withdrawing its troops from Somalia by increasing the cost of its military involvement.
The latest attack comes ahead of a meeting of African leaders to discuss the future of the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, following the United States' decision to end key logistical support for the mission.
