Airbus has successfully completed a record-breaking nonstop test flight, with its specially modified A350-1000ULR aircraft flying for 24 hours and 24 minutes from Melbourne, Australia, to Toulouse, France.
The aircraft covered approximately 23,075 kilometers (14,338 miles) without landing, marking a major milestone in Qantas' Project Sunrise, which aims to introduce the world's longest commercial passenger flights.
The ultra-long-haul aircraft is being developed to operate nonstop services between Sydney and London, as well as Sydney and New York, with commercial flights expected to begin in 2027.
According to Airbus, the A350-1000ULR is equipped with an additional fuel tank and is designed to carry 238 passengers over journeys lasting up to 20 hours. The aircraft has been undergoing extensive testing since June.
The historic flight attracted global attention, with flight-tracking platform Flightradar24 reporting that more than 3.6 million people followed the aircraft's journey in real time, making it the second most-tracked flight in the platform's history.
Qantas has ordered 12 of the specially modified aircraft and plans to launch daily nonstop flights between Sydney and London from October 2027, significantly reducing travel time between Australia and Europe by eliminating traditional stopovers.
