A funeral director in the United Kingdom is facing a lengthy prison sentence after authorities uncovered 31 bodies that had been left uncremated for months or even years, while grieving families were allegedly given the ashes of other people.
Robert Bush, the former owner of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, appeared before Hull Crown Court on Monday for the start of a five-day sentencing hearing. Prosecutors described the conditions inside his funeral home as shocking, with police discovering dozens of bodies in cold storage, many in advanced stages of decomposition. Investigators also recovered more than 100 sets of ashes from the premises.
Among the bodies found was that of a stillborn baby who had remained at the funeral home for nearly two years despite the child's family believing a cremation had already taken place.
Bush, 48, previously pleaded guilty to 67 criminal offences committed over a 12-year period. The charges include preventing lawful burial, theft, fraud, and falsely presenting ashes to families as those of their deceased loved ones.
One of the victims, Jasmine Beverley, said she was devastated to discover that the remains of her stillborn son, Sunny, had never been cremated as promised. She recalled learning that his body had been left inside the funeral home almost two years after his funeral, describing the revelation as deeply distressing.
The case has sparked widespread outrage across the UK and renewed calls for stricter regulation of funeral service providers. Prosecutors told the court that Bush abused the trust placed in him by bereaved families on a large scale.
Police launched their investigation in March 2024 after receiving a tip-off about concerns over the handling of bodies at the funeral home. During the sentencing hearing, the court is expected to hear impact statements from more than 100 victims and their relatives.
Bush's sentencing is expected to conclude later this week.
