At least 11 people have been confirmed dead and 19 others injured after a fire broke out at an orphanage in the Mohammadia district of Algiers, the capital of Algeria, in the early hours of Thursday.
Emergency officials said 10 of the injured suffered burns of varying degrees, while two experienced breathing difficulties and seven others were treated for shock. Rescue teams also evacuated five people with special needs to a safe location.
Authorities deployed a large emergency response, including 10 fire engines, 16 ambulances, two aerial ladder trucks, and a specialized rescue unit to contain the blaze and assist victims.
Firefighters remain at the scene as investigations into the cause of the fire continue. Officials have warned that the casualty figures are preliminary and could change as rescue operations progress.
