No fewer than 10 people lost their lives, while six others sustained injuries in a tragic road accident that occurred on Sunday evening at Saapade Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The crash, which happened at about 8:05 p.m., involved a white Sinotruk truck and a Toyota Hiace commercial bus.
According to the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Afolabi Odunsi, a total of 18 people were involved in the accident, including 15 adult men, two adult women, and one male child.
He said 10 victims—comprising nine adult men and one male child—died at the scene, while six others suffered varying degrees of injuries. Two adult men escaped unhurt.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC revealed that the crash was caused by excessive speeding, dangerous driving, and wrongful overtaking. The agency explained that the truck driver allegedly reversed on the expressway after missing his route, leaving little room for the approaching bus, which crashed into the truck while travelling at high speed.
FRSC rescue teams evacuated the injured victims to Victory Hospital in Ogere for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the FOS Mortuary in Ipara.
The crashed vehicles have been handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Ishara Division, while normal traffic has since resumed along the highway.
Reacting to the incident, Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He also urged motorists, especially commercial drivers and truck operators, to avoid reversing on highways, speeding, dangerous driving, and other traffic violations, stressing that adherence to road safety regulations can help prevent avoidable tragedies.
