Workers have begun removing the name of US President Donald Trump from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, following a court ruling that declared the renaming unlawful.
A US federal judge ordered that the Trump-added name be taken down, stating that the move required approval from Congress and could not be done by the center’s board alone. The court also set a deadline for the removal to be completed.
On Saturday, workers were seen on scaffolding at the iconic building as the lettering was taken down, with parts of the process covered from public view.
The decision followed a legal challenge and an earlier ruling by Judge Christopher Cooper, who rejected attempts by a Trump-aligned board to block the order. He said the change was not legally valid and that only Congress has authority to rename the institution.
The Kennedy Center board had previously voted in December to add Trump’s name to the building, and the change was quickly implemented before the court intervened.
The ruling is part of a broader legal dispute over attempts to reshape or rebrand US cultural and government-linked institutions during Trump’s presidency.
Trump has not yet made a detailed public response to the latest removal, but earlier he criticized related court rulings affecting his involvement with the center.
