Vietnamese man who was deported by the United States to South Sudan last year under a strict immigration policy has left the country and returned to Vietnam, South Sudanese officials said on Friday.
Tuan Thanh Phan was among migrants with criminal convictions transferred by U.S. authorities to third countries as part of deportation arrangements that attracted international attention.
South Sudan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Agok Anyar Madut, said the repatriation was coordinated between the governments of South Sudan and Vietnam.
Speaking at Juba International Airport before boarding his flight, Phan said he was looking forward to reuniting with his family after a long separation. He said he had spent 25 years in prison before being deported from the United States.
South Sudan had previously returned another deportee to Mexico who was also sent there under the same U.S. deportation programme. At least eight people have reportedly been deported from the U.S. to South Sudan under the arrangement.
