A joint military operation involving Nigerian forces and the United States Africa Command (United States Africa Command) has reportedly killed 21 fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in an air strike in Borno State.
Security sources said the operation took place in Arege, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State after intelligence and surveillance confirmed the presence of insurgents preparing for attacks in the Lake Chad region.
According to counter-insurgency analyst Zagazola Makama, the strike targeted a terrorist camp and resulted in the elimination of 21 militants, significantly disrupting their operational capacity.
The mission was described as intelligence-driven and part of ongoing coordinated efforts between Nigerian security forces and international partners to dismantle terrorist networks and restrict their movement across the North-East.
Military sources said the operation reflects increasing collaboration between Nigeria and foreign partners in counter-terrorism efforts, particularly in areas around the Lake Chad Basin where insurgent groups continue to operate.
Officials added that the latest strike comes weeks after similar joint operations in the region reportedly eliminated more than 20 ISWAP fighters, as security forces intensify efforts to weaken extremist groups in the area.
