The United States Senate has approved a war powers resolution aimed at forcing President Donald Trump to halt further military action against Iran unless he receives approval from Congress.
The measure, passed in a 50–48 vote, marks a rare challenge to the president’s authority over military operations. Four Republican senators joined Democrats in supporting the resolution.
The vote follows a similar move by the House of Representatives, which approved the resolution earlier in June.
The resolution directs the president to withdraw US armed forces from hostilities against Iran unless the action is authorised through a formal declaration of war or specific congressional approval.
However, it allows a limited US military presence in the Middle East to remain for the purpose of preventing an imminent attack against the United States or its allies.
Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer criticised Trump’s Iran campaign, accusing the administration of creating “confusion, chaos and cost” for Americans.
Four Republican senators — Bill Cassidy, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins and Rand Paul — broke party lines to support the measure, while most Democrats backed it.
The conflict has faced growing opposition in the US, with recent polling showing limited public support for the war.
Although the resolution represents a major political rebuke, experts say it may have limited practical effect because war powers resolutions do not carry the same force as laws.
The Trump administration has argued that the president has authority to conduct military operations without additional congressional approval, while critics insist the Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war.
The vote comes as US and Iranian officials continue diplomatic discussions in Switzerland over the ongoing crisis.
