North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced plans to equip the country’s navy with nuclear weapons and build larger warships, signaling a major expansion of Pyongyang’s military ambitions.
The announcement was made during the commissioning ceremony of the 5,000-tonne destroyer Choe Hyon at Nampho port. State media reported that Kim described the nuclear arming of the navy as a “strategic course” aimed at strengthening the country’s military readiness.
North Korea said the new warship carries some of its most advanced weapons, including cruise missiles that could potentially be fitted with tactical nuclear warheads. Kim also revealed plans to commission another large destroyer, the Kang Kon, and develop 10,000-tonne-class “strategic warships.”
Pyongyang said the naval expansion is necessary to deter threats from the United States and South Korea, accusing the allies of increasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
The move comes as North Korea continues efforts to expand its military capabilities, including the development of nuclear-powered submarines and advanced missile systems.
