A Pakistani anti-terrorism court has sentenced prominent human rights activist Dr. Mahrang Baloch and another leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) to life imprisonment over the killing of a paramilitary soldier during a protest in July 2024.
Baloch, who has been in detention since March 2025, is known for campaigning against enforced disappearances and alleged human rights abuses in Balochistan, a province facing a long-running insurgency.
Her lawyer said the defence would appeal the verdict at the Balochistan High Court.
Human rights groups criticised the trial, saying the accused were not allowed to fully participate in court proceedings and appeared only through video link before boycotting the hearings.
The court said it found Baloch and BYC colleague Sibghatullah guilty of murder and terrorism-related offences, citing witness statements and medical evidence.
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti said the ruling delivered justice for the paramilitary soldier who was killed during the protest in Gwadar.
A BYC organiser, Lala Abdul Baloch, described the trial as unfair and warned that the decision could increase anger among young people in the province.
The defence team said it would challenge the life sentences in court.
