Britain is expected to experience record-breaking temperatures this week as a powerful heatwave moves across Western Europe, prompting authorities to issue a rare extreme heat warning.
The country’s weather agency said temperatures could rise to around 39°C (102.2°F) by midweek, surpassing the previous June record of 35.6°C, recorded in 1957 and matched in 1976.
The heatwave is affecting southern and central England as well as parts of Wales, with officials warning that some areas may experience temperatures above 39°C.
The UK Health Security Agency issued only its second-ever heat-health alert, warning that extreme heat could pose serious risks even to healthy people, particularly the elderly and vulnerable.
Meteorologists also warned that high humidity and “tropical nights,” where temperatures remain above 20°C overnight, could increase health risks.
The heatwave follows another record-breaking period in May, when Britain recorded its hottest day for that month at 35.1°C.
Meanwhile, France has reported several deaths linked to extreme heat, while schools in some areas were forced to close. Northern Spain has also issued heat warnings as temperatures continue to rise.
Hospitals, schools and transport services across England and Wales are preparing for possible disruption, with authorities advising people to avoid unnecessary travel during the hottest periods.
Temperatures are expected to ease slightly by Friday, falling to around 32°C.
