A court in Tunisia has sentenced prominent opposition leader and Ennahdha party chief Rached Ghannouchi to life imprisonment, along with an additional 30-year term, after convicting him on terrorism-related charges linked to the so-called “secret apparatus” case.
The ruling, issued by the Tunis Court of First Instance on Tuesday, also affected dozens of co-defendants. Several received life sentences and lengthy prison terms after being found guilty of charges that included forming and supporting a terrorist organization.
Among those sentenced was Ali Laarayedh, along with other defendants who received prison terms ranging from 10 years to several decades. The court additionally ordered five years of administrative monitoring for all those convicted.
The case stems from investigations launched in 2022 following complaints connected to the 2013 assassinations of left-wing politicians Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi. Lawyers representing their families alleged that a clandestine Ennahdha-linked network was involved in the killings and had infiltrated state institutions.
Ennahdha has consistently rejected the accusations, arguing that the case is politically motivated and denying the existence of any secret organization within the party.
Ghannouchi, a former speaker of Tunisia’s parliament, has been imprisoned since 2023 after his arrest over remarks authorities said could incite unrest. Earlier this year, he was also sentenced to 20 years in prison in a separate case known as the “Ramadan soirée” affair.
His supporters and opposition groups have repeatedly called for his release, citing concerns over his health after reports that he was transferred from prison to a hospital in April. Tunisian authorities, however, maintain that the legal proceedings are unrelated to politics and are based solely on judicial investigations.
