Trump Unveils Interim Air Force One Gifted by Qatar

US President Donald Trump has unveiled a new interim presidential aircraft, known as Air Force One, at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

The aircraft, previously owned by Qatar, has been converted for use as a temporary presidential plane until new aircraft being produced by Boeing are ready.

Air Force One is the name given to any aircraft used to transport the President of the United States, usually specially modified Boeing 747 jets.

Trump described the aircraft as a “flying White House,” saying it had been transformed with a level of luxury and quality never seen before.

He thanked the Emir of Qatar for providing the aircraft, adding that the plane would represent a symbol of American prestige when landing at airports around the world.

However, the acceptance of the aircraft as a gift from Qatar has attracted criticism from some observers, who raised concerns about rules governing gifts to US presidents and possible conflicts of interest.

The US Air Force said the Boeing VC-25B Bridge aircraft would undergo initial testing flights before being officially placed into active service.

Officials said the safety and security of the president remained the top priority, and the aircraft would help reduce pressure on the ageing presidential fleet currently in operation.

The Air Force has previously stated that security modifications to the aircraft would cost less than $400 million.
