U.S. President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have exchanged sharp words following a controversy over a photograph taken during the G7 Summit in France.
Trump claimed on Saturday that Meloni repeatedly asked to take a picture with him during the meeting of world leaders, saying she wanted to improve her public image after the United States’ military actions against Iran.
Meloni rejected the claim, describing Trump’s remarks as “constant, unprovoked and senseless attacks.” She said the story was completely fabricated and insisted that her popularity did not depend on her relationship with the U.S. president.
In a statement on social media, Meloni said: “Being your friend certainly has not helped my popularity, nor does it depend on my relationship with you.”
Trump also criticised Italy’s decision not to allow the United States to use some Italian military facilities during tensions involving Iran, arguing that the U.S. provides major security support to Italy and other NATO allies.
Meloni responded that the use of American military bases in Italy is controlled by agreements that Rome has always respected, adding that Trump should focus on his own political standing.
The dispute marks a new strain in relations between the two leaders, who had recently appeared to improve ties during the G7 Summit.
Meloni had previously tried to act as a bridge between European leaders and the Trump administration, but disagreements over international issues, including the Iran conflict, have increased tensions.
Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also announced the cancellation of a planned visit to the United States following the latest remarks.
