US President Donald Trump has criticised opponents of the newly signed US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU), defending the agreement aimed at ending the conflict between Washington, Israel and Tehran.
Trump said the deal showed that Iran had been weakened by the war, claiming US military operations had damaged Iran’s navy, air force and conventional military strength.
In posts on social media, Trump rejected claims from Democrats and some Republican lawmakers that the agreement only addressed problems created by the conflict.
He said Iran entered negotiations out of “desperation” and declared that the country was “finished.”
The agreement includes discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme, the future of the Strait of Hormuz, frozen Iranian assets, sanctions relief and a proposed $300bn reconstruction plan.
However, the future of the deal has been questioned after US Vice President JD Vance postponed a planned trip to Switzerland to begin further negotiations.
The delay came as fighting continued in Lebanon, with Israeli attacks raising concerns that the diplomatic progress could collapse.
Trump also defended the deal against criticism from Republican lawmakers, including those who opposed lifting sanctions on Iran’s energy sector and the proposed reconstruction fund.
Meanwhile, Iran said it holds the US responsible for attacks in Lebanon, while reports indicated that a new ceasefire arrangement may have been reached.
Trump said his relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remained good, but added that Netanyahu needed to be kept “sane” amid the ongoing regional tensions.
