Train Crash in UK Leaves Nine in Critical Condition After Driver Dies

At least nine people remain in critical condition after two passenger trains collided near Bedford, England, killing one train driver.

British Transport Police said more than 80 people received medical treatment after the crash on Friday night, while 28 people are still in hospital.

Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi said: “As of this morning, 28 remain in hospital, and nine are in a critical condition.”

The collision involved two London-bound trains operated by East Midlands Railway (EMR) travelling on the same track. The driver of one of the trains died at the scene.

The East of England Ambulance Service said 11 people suffered “very serious” injuries, 32 had serious injuries, and 56 others sustained minor injuries.

Emergency teams, including more than 20 ambulances, specialist rescue units and six air ambulances, were sent to the crash site.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said it was too early to determine the cause of the accident, but a full investigation would be carried out by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and British Transport Police.

King Charles expressed sadness over the incident and sent condolences to the driver’s family and those injured.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether a signalling failure or other technical issue contributed to the crash.
