At Least 15 Migrant Bodies Found Along Eastern Libya Coast After Boat Capsizes

At least 15 migrant bodies, including a young girl, have washed ashore along Libya’s eastern Mediterranean coast after a boat carrying dozens of people was believed to have capsized.

Security, navy and medical sources said the boat was carrying about 61 migrants, according to 10 survivors.

The bodies were recovered from several locations along the coastline near Tobruk, a city close to the Egyptian border. Officials said some of the remains were badly decomposed and warned that more bodies could still be discovered.

Photos shared by the Tobruk Red Crescent showed rescue workers in protective suits recovering bodies from rocky shores and placing them in white bags.

Libya has become a major transit route for migrants trying to reach Europe since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, with many people attempting the dangerous journey across the desert and Mediterranean Sea.

Separately, medical officials in Khumas said 13 migrants were treated after another boat capsized off the coast.

Authorities continue efforts to recover bodies and investigate the latest tragedy.
