Tinubu Unveils Plan to Recruit 50,000 Police Officers, Boost Security Nationwide

President  has approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 police officers and thousands of additional military personnel as part of efforts to strengthen security across Nigeria.

Speaking during his Democracy Day address, the President said the government remains committed to tackling insecurity and protecting citizens from criminal activities nationwide.

Tinubu expressed concern over the recent abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states, describing the incidents as unfortunate. He, however, voiced optimism that security agencies would secure the safe return of the victims.

According to the President, security remains the foundation of democratic governance, stressing that no nation can achieve meaningful development in an atmosphere of fear and violence.

He revealed that the Federal Government had declared a security emergency and intensified measures aimed at improving the country’s security architecture. As part of these efforts, the administration has approved the recruitment of thousands of new personnel into the police and armed forces.

The President also disclosed that the 2026 national budget allocated ₦5.41 trillion to defence and security, describing it as the highest funding ever provided to the sector in Nigeria’s history.

Tinubu warned bandits, kidnappers and terrorism financiers to abandon their activities or face decisive action from the government.

He said those responsible for violence and criminality would not be spared, adding that the government remains determined to restore peace and stability across the country.

The President further urged Nigerians to support security agencies and avoid linking criminal acts to any ethnic group, emphasizing that crime has no tribal or regional identity.

Expressing confidence in the nation’s future, Tinubu assured citizens that his administration would continue to pursue policies aimed at defeating terrorism, reducing insecurity and building a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
