Students from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, have achieved international recognition after securing three major awards at the 10th Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals held in Shenzhen, China.

Competing against teams from more than 40 countries, the Nigerian students excelled in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and innovation categories, emerging among the competition's best performers.

The team won the Grand Prize in the AI/Innovation category with a project known as ParaVision, claimed first place in the Cloud track, and finished second in the Computing category. They also received the prestigious Women in Tech Award alongside Nigeria's Network Team during the award ceremony on June 5.

The global competition, held from June 2 to June 5, featured 177 teams from around the world competing in networking, cloud, computing, and AI innovation disciplines.

According to the university, the achievement highlights its growing reputation for technological innovation and digital skills development. The Huawei ICT Competition began in October 2025 and attracted more than 220,000 students globally before progressing through national and regional qualifying stages.

The ABU team earned a place at the global finals after successful performances at Nigeria's national finals in December 2025 and the Southern Africa regional finals in March 2026.

One of the team's standout achievements was the development of ParaVision, an artificial intelligence-powered solution built using Orange Pi AIPro technology and Huawei's Ascend 310B4 chip.

University officials explained that the system can conduct laboratory tests either simultaneously or independently and produce printed reports in under three minutes. The platform also supports multiple languages, including French, Arabic, Chinese, and Swahili.

The victorious students included Kumba-Banna Tekanyi, Yakubu Musa Yakubu, Adekunle Abdulroqeeb Oladimeji, Wakili Sefiu Bolaji, Yunus Muhammad, Ruqayyah Hassan Labo, Khadija Khalid, and Grace Temitayo Olorunfemi.

The students were guided by mentors Bashir Halliru Sani and Zaharaddeen Haruna.

University Vice-Chancellor Adamu Ahmed described the achievement as evidence of the institution's commitment to producing globally competitive graduates capable of driving technological advancement and solving real-world challenges.
