The South African government has rejected claims circulating on social media that members of the public would be paid financial rewards for reporting undocumented foreign nationals.
The Department of Home Affairs said the notice was fake and did not originate from the government agency.
In a statement shared on its official communication platform, the department clarified that neither it nor the Minister of Home Affairs offers money to citizens for reporting undocumented migrants.
Authorities urged the public to verify information through official channels before sharing messages online, warning against the spread of misinformation.
The clarification comes amid rising tensions and xenophobic attacks in South Africa, where some foreign nationals, including Nigerians, have reportedly faced harassment and violence.
The Nigerian government has begun efforts to evacuate affected citizens, with many Nigerians registering to return home after losing property and sources of livelihood.
Officials said Nigeria is pursuing diplomatic measures while calling on South African authorities to protect its citizens.
