At least nine people have been killed and dozens injured after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on several Ukrainian cities, including the capital, Kyiv.
Ukrainian officials said the strikes damaged residential areas, cultural landmarks, and critical infrastructure, leaving around 140,000 households without electricity.
One of the most significant incidents occurred at the historic Dormition Cathedral within the UNESCO-listed Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex.
Authorities said a drone struck the cathedral's roof, triggering a major fire that spread across hundreds of square metres. Emergency workers and monks worked together to rescue religious artifacts and historic items before firefighters brought the blaze under control.
The monastery is one of Ukraine’s most important religious and cultural sites and has been a major pilgrimage destination for centuries.
In Kyiv, around 20 people were reported injured, including a child and a pregnant woman, after missiles and drones hit residential buildings in several districts.
In the northeastern city of Kharkiv, five emergency service workers were killed while responding to an earlier strike. Officials said a second attack targeted rescuers as they battled a fire caused by the initial bombardment. Several other responders were injured.
Ukraine's Ministry of Culture reported that the attacks also damaged the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studios, destroying a major costume archive containing approximately 100,000 historical garments.
Religious and government leaders condemned the attack on the cathedral, describing it as an assault on Ukraine’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
The strikes came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin separately held discussions with Donald Trump regarding efforts to find a path toward peace in the ongoing war.
