Republican, Democrat Advance in High-Stakes California Governor Race

Republican candidate Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra have emerged as the leading contenders in California's gubernatorial primary, positioning themselves for a closely watched showdown in the November election.

Early vote counts showed Hilton holding a slight advantage over Becerra, while Democratic businessman Tom Steyer trailed behind the two front-runners. If the results hold, Hilton and Becerra will advance to the general election to compete for the state's top office.

The election will determine who succeeds Governor Gavin Newsom, whose tenure is ending due to term limits. California's next governor will inherit responsibility for managing a $4 trillion economy while addressing major issues such as housing costs, homelessness, water resources and public safety.

Becerra, a former California attorney general and former US health secretary, told supporters that his campaign reflects the aspirations of immigrant families across the state. A victory in November would make him California's first elected Latino governor.

Hilton, a former political adviser and television commentator, has focused his campaign on tackling affordability challenges, reducing homelessness and reforming state government. Backed by President Donald Trump, he has argued that California needs a new direction after years of Democratic leadership.

The race is drawing national attention because California has not elected a Republican governor since Arnold Schwarzenegger left office in 2011. A Hilton victory would represent a major breakthrough for the Republican Party in one of the country's most reliably Democratic states.

Elsewhere, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass appeared on track to advance in her re-election bid, with voters citing concerns about housing affordability, homelessness and wildfire recovery efforts.

California's unique primary system places all candidates on the same ballot regardless of party affiliation, with the two highest vote-getters advancing to the general election. The early results suggest voters are heading toward a rare Democrat-versus-Republican contest for governor later this year.
