Nigeria's House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to urgently secure the release of 42 schoolchildren abducted from Mussa Ward in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The appeal was made on Tuesday following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance presented by lawmaker Midala Balami, who represents the Askira-Uba/Hawul Federal Constituency.
Speaking during the debate, Balami expressed concern over the continued attacks on schools and communities in parts of northern Nigeria, warning that the trend threatens access to education and undermines public confidence in government efforts to provide security.
He stressed that protecting students, teachers and educational institutions is a fundamental responsibility of government and noted that recurring attacks have left many communities living in fear.
The lawmaker recalled several major abduction incidents in Borno State, including the 2014 kidnapping of schoolgirls from Chibok, many of whom remain unaccounted for. He also referenced attacks on communities and travellers in different parts of the state.
According to Balami, the persistent insecurity has disrupted education, affected livelihoods and contributed to declining school attendance in vulnerable areas. He argued that stronger and more coordinated measures are needed to protect schools and restore public confidence.
Following deliberations, lawmakers urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted children and all other persons currently being held captive by armed groups.
The House also called for increased security around schools in Borno and other high-risk regions through enhanced deployment of security personnel, improved intelligence gathering and more effective rapid-response systems.
In addition, lawmakers advocated the expansion of school safety initiatives, including early-warning mechanisms, community-based security arrangements, awareness programmes and improved surveillance infrastructure.
The House mandated its committees on National Security, Defence, Basic Education and Legislative Compliance to engage relevant agencies and provide updates on actions taken to secure the release of abductees and strengthen school protection measures nationwide.
Lawmakers further urged the Federal Government to establish and implement a comprehensive Safe Schools Security Framework designed to safeguard students, teachers and educational facilities from future attacks.
The motion comes amid ongoing concerns over school kidnappings in Nigeria's North-East and North-West regions, where armed groups have repeatedly targeted educational institutions in recent years.
Balami concluded by emphasizing that the safety of children and the protection of education must remain a national priority, calling for immediate and decisive action to address the growing security challenge.
