A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines early Monday, killing at least 15 people, injuring more than 120 others, and triggering tsunami warnings across several countries in Asia.
The quake hit at approximately 7:40 a.m. local time off the coast of Maasim in Sarangani Province on the island of Mindanao. According to seismic authorities, the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 33 kilometers beneath the seabed.
Officials reported widespread panic as strong shaking was felt across southern Philippines and neighboring parts of Indonesia. More than 130 aftershocks were recorded within hours, including one measuring 6.7 in magnitude.
Emergency responders are assessing damage across affected communities. Initial reports indicate that most casualties resulted from collapsing structures and falling debris. Buildings, schools, hospitals, and businesses sustained varying levels of damage.
In General Santos, a fast-food restaurant building collapsed, sending frightened residents running for safety. A university building also suffered structural failure, while one hospital was evacuated due to concerns over cracks in its upper floors.
The earthquake prompted tsunami alerts in the southern Philippines, northern Indonesia, and parts of Malaysia. Authorities in Indonesia reported waves reaching up to 0.75 metres in some coastal areas, leading residents to move to higher ground as a precaution.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered an immediate disaster response, directing government agencies to prepare evacuation centres, relief supplies, and rescue teams for affected communities.
The Philippines lies within the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, making it one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. The latest disaster comes only months after a deadly earthquake struck the country, highlighting the continuing threat posed by powerful seismic activity in the region.
Authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and assess the full extent of the damage as rescue and relief operations remain underway.
