Pope Leo XIV has said that “all of us are migrants,” as he addressed migrants at a reception centre in Tenerife, Spain, during the final day of his weeklong visit focused on immigration issues.
Speaking at Las Raíces reception centre, a former military barracks, the Pope told hundreds of migrants that humanity shares a common journey, adding that people are “pilgrims on the way to our heavenly homeland.”
He called for stronger efforts to make migration safer and more humane, urging governments and societies to help protect vulnerable people and combat human trafficking.
The Pope also condemned indifference toward migrants and warned that Europe risks turning the Mediterranean and Atlantic migration routes into “unmarked graves” if more is not done to save lives.
According to migration data cited in the report, nearly 1,200 people died or went missing last year while attempting to cross from Africa to the Canary Islands, one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes.
He is expected to continue his tour with a mass in Tenerife before returning to Rome, and later travel to Lampedusa, another key migration entry point into Europe.
