Pope Leo is set to begin a week-long visit to Spain, where he is expected to emphasize support for migrants and deliver several high-profile addresses to political and religious leaders.
The visit, scheduled from June 6 to June 12, marks his first trip to a European Union country outside Italy. It will include stops in Madrid, Barcelona, Montserrat, and Spain’s Canary Islands, where the pope is expected to meet migrants who have crossed dangerous Atlantic routes in search of entry into Europe.
A key focus of the trip will be the situation facing migrants arriving in Spain, particularly those who undertake perilous sea journeys to reach the Canary Islands. Church-linked aid organizations report that thousands of people have died in recent years attempting the crossing.
During the tour, Pope Leo is also expected to address Spain’s parliament, becoming the first pontiff to do so, and meet with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia at the Royal Palace in Madrid. Large public gatherings are anticipated, including a major outdoor Mass in central Madrid.
In Barcelona, he will visit the Sagrada Familia basilica, where he is scheduled to inaugurate a newly completed section of the landmark church. The visit is expected to draw significant public attention, with hundreds of thousands reportedly expressing interest in attending events.
Beyond religious engagements, the pope may also meet privately with survivors of clergy abuse in Spain, according to sources familiar with the arrangements, although this has not been officially confirmed by the Vatican.
The trip comes as Spain continues to debate immigration policy, including a large-scale legalization program for undocumented migrants. Analysts say the pope’s visit is likely to draw both religious enthusiasm and political attention amid broader European migration debates.
