A 24-year-old woman in Alabama has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole after being convicted of killing another pregnant woman in a violent confrontation linked to a shared relationship.
According to court reports, the incident occurred on July 7, 2023, in Birmingham, when Aaniyah Nowden shot 36-year-old Justina Wallace during an argument involving a man connected to both women. Wallace, a mother of five who was also pregnant at the time, was holding her young toddler when she was fatally shot. Her unborn child also did not survive.
Prosecutors said the dispute stemmed from a complicated relationship involving the father of both women’s children. Witnesses and evidence presented in court indicated that Wallace arrived at Nowden’s residence before the confrontation escalated. Authorities also stated that Wallace was unarmed during the incident.
Nowden claimed she acted in self-defense, but jurors rejected that argument after reviewing testimony and available footage of the shooting. She was originally charged with multiple counts of capital murder, though some charges were later dismissed during the trial.
The court ultimately sentenced her to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a close to a case that has drawn attention due to its tragic circumstances involving two pregnant women and young children caught in the aftermath.
