Philippines Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 37 as Rescue Operations Continue

At least 37 people have been killed and about 400 injured after a powerful magnitude 7.8 offshore earthquake struck southern Philippines, with rescue teams continuing urgent search operations for survivors.

The worst-hit area is General Santos City in Mindanao, where several buildings collapsed, trapping residents under rubble. Emergency responders are still working through debris as two people remain missing at a commercial site.

Authorities said multiple aftershocks, including a magnitude 6.5 tremor, followed the main quake, further complicating rescue efforts. The shaking was felt across wide areas, with tsunami warnings briefly issued in nearby regions.

General Santos has declared a state of calamity as damaged infrastructure, blocked roads, and power outages slow emergency response operations. Landslides in surrounding provinces have also contributed to the rising death toll.

Officials warn the number of casualties may increase as search and recovery efforts continue in hard-to-reach areas.
