One Year After Air India Disaster, Families Still Await Final Answers

Families of the victims of the Air India Flight AI171 tragedy gathered in Ahmedabad on Friday to mark the first anniversary of one of India's deadliest aviation disasters, which claimed 260 lives.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, while en route to London Gatwick Airport. The aircraft went down in the residential Meghani Nagar area near the airport, striking a medical college hostel and causing heavy casualties both on board and on the ground.

Of the 242 passengers and crew aboard the flight, only one person survived. In addition, 19 people on the ground were killed, bringing the total death toll to 260. Dozens of others were injured.

Despite the passage of a year, relatives of the victims are still waiting for a final report explaining the cause of the crash. Indian aviation authorities are expected to release an interim update soon, but a complete investigation report may take several more months.

A preliminary report released last year revealed that fuel supplies to both engines were cut off moments before the aircraft crashed. However, investigators did not determine whether the shutdown resulted from human error, a technical malfunction, or another factor.

The findings sparked widespread debate and speculation, including theories about possible pilot involvement. Pilot associations have urged investigators to gather additional technical evidence before drawing conclusions.

According to reports, investigators recently conducted engine tests and continued examinations involving Boeing and engine manufacturer GE Aerospace. Officials say further analysis is needed before a final determination can be made.

On the anniversary, grieving families attended memorial events, legal forums, and candlelight vigils, calling for transparency, accountability, and justice for those who lost their lives in the disaster.

Authorities expect the final crash report to be released later this year after all technical investigations are completed.
