One person has been shot dead and two others injured after clashes broke out between residents and police in a Nairobi informal settlement on Tuesday, following allegations that two activists were abducted by security forces.
The Kenyan capital was heavily affected last week after police deployed in large numbers as campaigners marked a day of remembrance for protesters who were killed during previous demonstrations.
Although June 25 passed without major unrest due to the heavy security presence, several activists were arrested while some others reportedly disappeared for days.
New protests erupted on Tuesday in the Mathare informal settlement over the disappearances. An AFP journalist reported that one person was killed while two others sustained injuries.
Wanjira Wanjiru of the Mathare Social Justice Centre said activists had planned a peaceful gathering to demand the release of Maxwell Kiarie and Abdulaziz Molu, who she said were “abducted under unclear circumstances” in the past two weeks.
She said the protest was aimed at raising concerns over alleged forced disappearances.
Images shared on social media showed groups of protesters clashing with police officers, with tear gas spreading between buildings.
Mathare, located in eastern Nairobi, is a large informal settlement that is home to hundreds of thousands of people.
