North Korea Carries Out Major Weapons Tests as South Korea Trains ‘Drone Warriors’

Pyongyang says military upgrades are aimed at strengthening its defence capabilities, while Seoul expands drone operations amid rising tensions.

North Korea has carried out a series of major weapons tests as leader Kim Jong Un pushes to strengthen the country’s military power and increase pressure along its border with South Korea.

State media reported that Kim supervised tests involving upgraded rocket launch systems, tactical ballistic missiles and self-propelled artillery. He called for a “deadly and destructive offensive posture” to ensure North Korea’s enemies remain cautious.

North Korea said one of the tested missile systems included a special warhead designed to strike key targets such as military bases, ports and power facilities.

The tests come amid continuing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with analysts saying the upgraded weapons could give Pyongyang the ability to threaten targets across South Korea.

South Korea’s Defence Ministry responded by announcing plans to expand its drone capabilities. Defence officials said the country intends to train about 500,000 “drone warriors” who could operate drones as part of modern battlefield operations.

South Korean officials also accused North Korea of receiving technological support from Russia, while President Lee Jae Myung announced plans to strengthen the country’s defence industry.

The United States maintains thousands of troops in South Korea, and regional tensions have increased as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Pyongyang remain stalled.
