At least nine Palestinians were killed and dozens injured in separate Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, according to local reports, as Egyptian mediators launched a new round of discussions aimed at preserving a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Five people were reportedly killed when an Israeli strike hit a police post in the al-Mawasi area near Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Three others lost their lives in Gaza City's Zeitoun neighbourhood, while another person was killed in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza.
The latest violence came as representatives of Hamas and other Palestinian factions met with mediators in Cairo to discuss ways of advancing negotiations and preventing a collapse of the ceasefire arrangement that has largely reduced large-scale fighting since October 2025.
Sources familiar with the talks said Hamas reiterated its position that a complete halt to Israeli military operations in Gaza remains essential for any breakthrough in negotiations. Officials from Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye are participating in the mediation efforts.
Despite the ceasefire, sporadic attacks and clashes have continued in various parts of Gaza. Reports indicate that hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and thousands injured since the truce took effect, while a number of Israeli soldiers have also been killed during the same period.
Key issues delaying progress include the future of Hamas’s armed wing, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and plans for the territory’s reconstruction after years of conflict and widespread destruction.
The Cairo talks are expected to continue over the coming days as mediators seek common ground between both sides and work toward a more comprehensive and lasting agreement.
