A woman has been killed and set ablaze by an angry mob in Maraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, after being accused of attempting to steal children.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday and caused tension in the community, with residents saying rumours of child theft had created fear and suspicion among locals.
According to witnesses, the victim, a married woman and mother, was on her way to attend an Islamic lesson when some youths accused her of trying to abduct children.
The allegation quickly spread, attracting a crowd that attacked her before police officers arrived and rescued her. She was taken to a nearby police station for protection and investigation.
However, the situation escalated when hundreds of youths stormed the station, demanding that the woman be handed over to them. The mob reportedly overpowered security personnel, removed her from custody and set her on fire.
Police officers fired warning shots during the chaos, and one person was reportedly killed while others sustained injuries.
A resident condemned the incident, saying the woman should have been allowed to face proper investigation instead of being subjected to mob justice.
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the attack, describing the allegation against the woman as a “false claim of child stealing.”
Police spokesperson DSP Mansir Hassan said officers had rescued the woman earlier but the mob later invaded the station, killed her and burnt her body.
He described the act as criminal and a serious violation of the rule of law.
Several suspects have been arrested, while police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend other people linked to the attack.
Authorities have launched a full investigation and vowed that those responsible will face prosecution.
