A group supporting Palestine, the Global Sumud Flotilla, says four activists who were detained in Libya for about a month have been released.
The group said on Wednesday that the released activists are Achraf Khoja from Tunisia, Matias Rodriguez from Uruguay, and two Italians, Domenico Centrone and Leonarda Alberizia. They have arrived in Tunisia, while six other detainees are expected to be released within 24 hours.
Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani welcomed the release, saying the two Italians and Rodriguez were handed over to the Italian consulate in Benghazi and would return to Italy.
More than 400 activists were arrested last month in international waters while travelling on boats towards Gaza in an attempt to challenge Israel’s blockade of the territory.
The activists detained in Libya were part of another group that tried to reach Gaza by land through Libya and Egypt. They had reportedly gone on hunger strike to protest their detention.
Amnesty International said the 10 activists from eight countries were arrested on May 24 by an armed group linked to forces controlling eastern and southern Libya while they were travelling to Sirte to seek approval for their convoy to continue its journey.
The activists were later questioned and placed in pretrial detention over allegations including “assembly without authorization.”
