France has confirmed its first Ebola case during the current outbreak after a doctor returning from a humanitarian mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) tested positive, French health authorities said.
In a statement on Wednesday, the French Health Ministry said the healthcare worker had been working in an area where the virus was spreading.
“The patient is receiving treatment at a major healthcare facility under strict safety measures,” the ministry said.
It added that all necessary precautions, including isolation of the patient and secure transportation to the hospital, were taken to prevent the spread of the virus.
Health authorities have started an epidemiological investigation to identify people who may have had contact with the patient. Those identified will be asked to isolate themselves for 21 days.
Since May, Ituri Province in northeastern DR Congo has been the centre of an Ebola outbreak, which has killed more than 260 people and infected over 1,000 others in the country.
Cases have also been reported in neighbouring Uganda.
On May 17, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern.”
Previous Ebola outbreaks in DR Congo were mostly caused by the Ebola Zaire strain, but the current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments.
