Israeli forces have captured the medieval hilltop fortress known as Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon as part of an ongoing and widening military campaign against Hezbollah, according to Israeli officials and regional reports.
The 12th-century stronghold, known locally as Beaufort Castle, sits on a strategic elevation overlooking large parts of southern Lebanon and areas near the Israeli border. The Israeli military says controlling the site gives it a major surveillance and tactical advantage in its operations against Hezbollah positions in the region.
Originally built by Crusaders, the fortress has changed hands multiple times over centuries, including Ottoman control and later use by various armed groups. Israel previously occupied the site during its 1982 invasion of Lebanon before withdrawing from southern Lebanon in 2000.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described the recapture of the site as part of a broader effort to establish a security buffer zone inside Lebanese territory. The Israeli army has reportedly advanced further into southern Lebanon in recent days, supported by airstrikes and ground operations targeting villages around Nabatieh and other nearby areas.
Lebanese authorities and media reports say the escalation has resulted in significant casualties and displacement, with thousands reportedly killed or injured since the renewed conflict intensified earlier this year. Civilians in several southern villages have been ordered to evacuate as military operations expand.
Hezbollah, backed by Iran, has continued to engage Israeli forces with rocket and drone attacks, framing its actions as retaliation for earlier strikes. Meanwhile, Israel says its objective is to dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure and prevent cross-border attacks.
The capture of Beaufort Castle is being viewed by analysts as both symbolic and strategic, reinforcing Israel’s presence in high-ground positions that overlook key routes and population centres in southern Lebanon.
