Voting has begun across Ethiopia in parliamentary and regional elections that are widely expected to secure a comfortable victory for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s ruling Prosperity Party.
More than 50 million registered voters are participating in the polls, although voting has been suspended in parts of the country, including the Tigray region and several constituencies in Amhara, due to ongoing security concerns and political instability following recent conflicts.
The Prosperity Party, which has dominated Ethiopian politics since Abiy came to power in 2018, is facing a fragmented opposition that has struggled to mount a unified challenge. In the previous election, the party secured a strong parliamentary majority.
Abiy has campaigned on his government’s economic achievements, including improvements in food security and rapid economic growth projections. He has promised further reforms and national development in the coming term.
However, the election is taking place against a backdrop of continued unrest in parts of Oromiya and Amhara regions, where armed groups remain active. Critics also argue that political repression and restrictions on opposition activity have weakened democratic competition—allegations the government denies.
International observers, including African Union representatives, have described the voting process as largely peaceful in the early stages.
Results of the election are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
