At least 14 people were killed and dozens injured in a series of Israeli air strikes across southern Lebanon on Monday, according to Lebanese authorities, as tensions escalated following a recent exchange of fire between Israel and Iran.
The attacks came a day after an Israeli strike on Beirut and amid warnings from Iran that continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon could trigger stronger retaliation.
According to Lebanon's National News Agency, an Israeli strike near a Red Cross centre in the coastal city of Tyre killed five people and wounded eight others, including paramedics. Lebanese officials also reported damage to a UNESCO World Heritage site in the city.
In separate strikes, two people, including a child, were killed in al-Marwaniyah in the Sidon district, while seven others died in Zefta in the Nabatieh district. Several women and children were reported among the casualties.
The Lebanese armed group Hezbollah said it carried out multiple operations against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, claiming to have targeted military positions and equipment near the strategic Beaufort Castle area.
The latest violence follows renewed tensions between Israel and Iran despite a ceasefire agreement reached in April. While Iran announced an end to its attacks on Israel, Tehran warned that continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon could provoke a stronger response.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz rejected the warning, stating that Israel would continue operations against Hezbollah and respond forcefully to any attacks from Lebanon.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said Israel has conducted nearly 3,500 air strikes and hundreds of demolition operations since mid-April, causing widespread destruction across southern Lebanon.
According to Lebanon's Health Ministry, the death toll from the conflict since March has reached 3,637, with more than 11,000 people injured. More than one million residents have reportedly been displaced, placing increasing pressure on shelters and humanitarian services.
Aid organizations have warned that the humanitarian situation is worsening, with many displaced families unable to meet basic needs and numerous communities returning to find homes and infrastructure destroyed. Calls for a lasting ceasefire have intensified as concerns grow over further regional escalation.
